Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
